STEAM Lab

Grades 4-8

$25/month

Teacher: Tiena Thacker

STEAM lab integrates the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math into a class full of exciting experiments, activities, projects and challenges that will keep your child engaged and learning, all while having fun! One week we might build a bridge, then test it to see if it is structurally sound or learn how planes fly, then experiment with different types of materials to build our own planes. We might test various ingredients and colors to create our own paints and piece of art. Or we might design and construct a maze using code, then see if other groups can solve it.
STEAM lab promotes a love of learning, curiosity, critical thinking and creativity. It inspires students to explore, analyze, learn from their mistakes and try again as they work out solutions in a hands-on and open- ended learning approach. It will motivate and challenge them to make connections between concepts they are learning in the sciences, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics and how to apply them to real world problems.
Working in teams, students will hypothesize, strategize, investigate, create, and problem-solve to complete the activities each week, while also working on important skills such as communication, conflict resolution, cooperation, and following directions. In STEAM Lab, students will not only learn to think outside the box to solve problems but will feel empowered and excited about learning!

Project Based Learning Challenge

Grades 4-8

$25/month

Teacher: Tiena Thacker

When my kids were younger they loved putting on shows for us.  Not only would they sing and dance, but they would spend hours setting up chairs, making tickets and programs, designing costumes, looking up songs, practicing dance moves, and making snacks to sell at intermission.  What they didn’t realize at the time was that they were doing a beginning version of project-based learning!  They still love project-based learning more than anything else we do!  Project-based learning is a creative learning experience in which students collaborate with others to solve problems in a real-world situation. It makes learning exciting, relevant, and purposeful.  Instead of just reading about a topic, students use multiple subjects, like math, science, engineering, art, social studies and writing, and other important skills like critical thinking, investigation, problem-solving, communication, cooperation, and imagination to work their way through a project challenge. Each project-based learning challenge lasts several weeks allowing students time to delve deep into a problem or situation and gain a better understanding of it.

For example, students might be challenged to create an amusement park. The students would design and plan the layout of the park, build a prototype of a ride, propose a budget, plan a food menu and develop a marketing campaign.  They would research to see what type of rides are popular, what type of jobs would need to be filled, what foods work best at amusement parks, how things like weather and seasons might affect the park's attendance, then create solutions to each problem. Whether they're tasked with running a lemonade stand, designing a tiny house, managing a toy drive, or organizing an arctic adventure, project-based learning is a fantastic way to introduce your child to the behind-the-scenes aspect of the real world!  Supply fee: $25/semester

Study Skills

So often we get so caught up in completing our assignments and meeting deadlines that we are not able to think through how we actually learn or consider what works best for us.  We can get stressed, and stress builds up in our homes.

This class will look at scheduling, organization, notetaking, learning styles, prioritization, and avoiding procrastination (oh yes!). We will consider how these areas can be developed to help us now in our learning, and also identify the relevance in every aspect of our lives. We will make the connections of these skills and aptitudes into our future careers.

This class is equally relevant whether we are just starting high school or preparing for college.

(This class cannot be started in January)
