Compass will be offering the ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Standards) for grades 3-8 and the ITED (Iowa Test of Educational Development) for grades 9-12 this year.  These are well-respected nationally-standardized tests that will meet the requirements for GA law as well as provide parents with an accurate assessment of their children's skills.

The tests measure educational achievement in a variety of subject areas, including language skills (vocabulary, reading, word analysis, spelling), math, social studies, and science.  This can be a good gauge of how your child is doing in certain areas compared to other students throughout the country or compared to his/her own results from previous years.  Or, you may choose to never open the results if you only want to do the test to be in compliance with the law.  The great thing about homeschooling is that parents have the freedom to choose!

While the law requires that homeschooled children take a standardized test every three years, parents are welcome to test more frequently if they choose.

Information About the ITBS at Compass

The ITBS and ITED at Compass are administered by qualified and experienced teachers with other adults onsite to provide assistance as needed.

The testing space is kept quiet to allow the students to do their best on the test.  For May 2021, we will monitor the situation with COVID-19 and implement appropriate measures for safety.  We are waiting until closer to time to determine those measures, but all registrants will be informed of the measures in mid-late April and given the opportunity to continue with the test or withdraw registration for a full refund.

During the course of the testing, opportunities to take breaks for snacks and going outside are provided to help keep the students fresh and focused.

You will need to complete a form for each student.  However, you can submit payment for all students in one transaction.  Test results will be mailed directly to the parents with links and contact information provided if parents want help interpreting the test scores.

You will need to use the form below to register for the ITBS at Compass and then submit payment (Paypal or check/cash at Compass)

2021 Testing & COVID Precautions

The 3rd-8th grade testing will take place on May 17, 18, & 19 from approximately 9:00-12:00 each day.

The 9th-12th grade testing will take place on May 17-18 from approximately 9:00-12:00 each day.

    • We will be spreading the students out between three classrooms in order to allow for more students and more spacing.

    • Tables will be spaced in the classrooms, and students will sit 2 students to a 6-ft table or 3 students to an 8-ft table.  Unfortunately, we don't have enough tables or space for 1 child per table.

    • If you are not comfortable with your child sharing a table with 1 or 2 other students, we do have a few small tables that can be used for individual students.  You just need to let us know in advance so we can be prepared.

    • We will take all students' temperatures at the door.  Anyone with a temperature over 100 degrees will not be permitted in to take the test.

    • Students who have COVID or any symptoms of COVID should stay home.

    • Students who have been exposed to a COVID-positive person in the two weeks prior to the test should stay home (or have a negative COVID test).

    • We will provide hand sanitizer and encourage all students to clean hands frequently.

    • Masks are welcome but not required.  If case numbers rise significantly between now and the testing dates, we would consider requiring masks in the hallways during transition times but allow students to remove them while they are seated and testing.

    • We build in a few breaks during the day so the students have a chance to stretch their legs and get their wiggles out.  Typically, we do 1-2 stretch breaks in the classroom and 1 longer break outdoors.

    • During indoor stretch breaks, students will be encouraged to keep their distance from one another, but they will have the opportunity to chat, go to the bathroom, and drink water (they should bring their own water bottle).

    • During the outdoor stretch break, we will take the students outside and let them run around.  Again, they can go to the bathroom, chat, and drink water or have a snack.

    • If you are uncomfortable with your child participating in the outdoor stretch break, just let us know, and he/she can stay indoors with an adult during that time.

Please notify me by an email to by noon on Wednesday, April 7 f you wish to...

  • remove your child from the ITBS at Compass and receive a refund,

  • have your child seated at a smaller, individual table,

  • have your children be seated with siblings (or family "pod" members) only...
