STEAM Lab

Grades K4-3, 4-8

$25/month

Teacher: Tiena Thacker

STEAM lab integrates the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math into a class full of exciting experiments, activities, projects and challenges that will keep your child engaged and learning, all while having fun! One week we might build a bridge, then test it to see if it is structurally sound or learn how planes fly, then experiment with different types of materials to build our own planes. We might test various ingredients and colors to create our own paints and piece of art. Or we might design and construct a maze using code, then see if other groups can solve it.
STEAM lab promotes a love of learning, curiosity, critical thinking and creativity. It inspires students to explore, analyze, learn from their mistakes and try again as they work out solutions in a hands-on and open- ended learning approach. It will motivate and challenge them to make connections between concepts they are learning in the sciences, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics and how to apply them to real world problems. Working in teams, students will hypothesize, strategize, investigate, create, and problem-solve to complete the activities each week, while also working on important skills such as communication, conflict resolution, cooperation, and following directions. In STEAM Lab, students will not only learn to think outside the box to solve problems but will feel empowered and excited about learning!  Supply fee: $25/semester

Project Based Learning

Grades 2-5 & 4-8

$25/month

Teacher: Tiena Thacker

When my kids were younger they loved putting on shows for us. Not only would they sing and dance, but they would spend hours setting up chairs, making tickets and programs, designing costumes, looking up songs, practicing dance moves, and making snacks to sell at intermission. What they didn’t realize at the time was that they were doing a beginning version of project-based learning! They still love project-based learning more than anything else we do! Project-based learning is a creative learning experience in which students collaborate with others to solve problems in a real-world situation. It makes learning exciting, relevant, and purposeful. Instead of just reading about a topic, students use multiple subjects, like math, science, engineering, art, social studies, and writing, along with other important skills like critical thinking, investigation, problem-solving, communication, cooperation, and imagination to work their way through a project challenge. Each project- based learning challenge lasts several weeks allowing students time to delve deep into a problem or situation and gain a better understanding of it.
For example, students might be challenged to create an amusement park. The students would design and plan the layout of the park, build a prototype of a ride, propose a budget, plan a food menu and develop a marketing campaign. They would research to see what type of rides are popular, what type of jobs would need to be filled, what foods work best at amusement parks, how things like weather and seasons might affect the park's attendance, then create solutions to each problem. Whether they're tasked with running an ice cream stand, designing a tiny house, managing a food drive, developing a game show, or planning an escape room adventure, project-based learning is a fantastic way to introduce your child to the behind-the-scenes aspect of the real world!
* Please note – If your child has previously taken Project Based Learning with me, all new projects are planned
for this year, keeping it interesting and exciting for returning and new students alike!

These classes continually build on knowledge and skills learned in previous years, so returning students are always welcome and will have room to grow in their dramatic craft. Although we will give a fun presentation for the parents at the end of each semester, the focus will be more on skills and less on performance. Students will perform at the end of fall and spring semester. Students will need to bring a folder with pockets. Students/Parents are responsible for providing their own costumes.   Supply fee: $10/semester

Piano Lessons

Grades 3-8

$40/month

Teacher: William Dennis

Piano Lessons will be offered as two private sessions per period (20 minutes each).  Instruction will be customized to the students' level of knowledge and skill, so whether the students are brand new to reading music and playing an instrument or have a few years under their belt, these lessons will help the students progress in their piano playing skills.  Students will be expected to practice at home throughout the week, so access to a piano or keyboard at home is essential.  Students will not need to bring a keyboard to class - just their books and a desire to play!  Students will be using the Faber Piano Adventure series books (level to be selected based on students' prior knowledge and skill).  Supply fee: Piano book, typically around $10.

Teacher: Elizabeth Long

Let's play soccer together!

  • Grades K4-2: In this class we will introduce the students to the basics of soccer - the correct way to dribble and shoot and pass. We will do a few drills and games to work on these skills, but will mostly learn as we go through playing the game together and stopping for teachable moments.

  • Grades 2-5: In this class we will build on the basics. We will still learn primarily by playing the game together and stopping for teachable moments, but will work more on dribbling and passing and trapping the ball than in the younger class. The skills that we practice in class will be tailored to the ability of each student.

For either class, students will need to bring a water bottle and shin guards to every class. They will also need to wear clothing that will allow them to play outside in most weather. Supply Fee: $10/semester

Soccer Scrimmage

In class, we will focus on teaching passing strategy and how a team should work together to score goals, not solo. Students will need to bring a water bottle and shin guards to every class. They will also need to wear clothing that will allow them to play outside in most weather. Supply Fee: $5/year

Archery

Grades 3-8

Teacher: Jenny Liedberg

This outdoor target archery class will introduce students to the terminology, equipment, and basic shooting techniques needed to have fun and shoot safely. Once students have achieved success with the basic shot process, we will add elements such as games, walking while shooting, shooting moving targets, and optional scoring competition. On days with inclement or cold weather, we will learn together indoors about archery history and culture around the world, review with simple terminology quizzes, and practice correct form and posture with exercises. This class will be conducted in a supportive and encouraging manner with an emphasis on safety, fun, and personal improvement rather than competition with others.  Students will use a class set of bows and arrows and are not required to bring them to class.
