Introduction to Computer Coding, Advanced

This class is an introductory-level course for students brand new to programming and computer science. In this course students will be exposed to a diverse set of computational thinking concepts, fundamentals, and tools, allowing them to gain understanding and build confidence. Using Sphero Bolts and Sphero Minis (coding robots) they will be introduced to logical thinking and collaboration using pseudo code and Python. (They are not required to purchase these. I have a set of 6 of each for class use.) As they gain confidence they will learn to program their own micro:bit microcontroller.. (Additionally, they will also be introduced to basic Javascript during this course.) While similar to the middle school class, this class will focus more on Python and the basics of using a computer language to write programs and create code. Additionally, it will be more in depth and move at a faster pace. $35 supply fee cover the entire year and will not be charged again in January.

Requirements:

Each student will need a computer or tablet. The Sphero devices can be programmed using phones, Fire tablets, Android tablets, and iPads. The apps do not work on computers. The micro:bits microcontroller can be programmed on both computers and tablets. Please contact me if you have questions about your device. Both Sphero and Micro:bits require a free app to be installed on the device if used on a tablet / phone. In summary, an iPad or Android tablet should work for both.

For this high school level course students will also need a Python IDE.(Integrated Development Environment) There are several options. Python is free on computers and there are apps under $20 that work on tablets. This won’t be needed until several weeks into the course. I will provide information and options to students based on their devices.
