Photography
Grades
8th-12th
This intensive photography course is designed for high school students who are serious about developing their creative voice and technical skills. Through hands-on projects, guided practice, and professional critique, students will learn how to use their cameras with intention and confidence—whether shooting with a DSLR or a smartphone.
This is not a casual or “easy” class. Students are expected to work consistently outside of class, meet deadlines, and take their projects seriously. Photography assignments require planning, shooting, editing, and revision. Strong time management and personal responsibility are essential for success.
Students will explore the fundamentals of photography, including composition, lighting, exposure, storytelling, and visual style. They will also learn photo editing and design skills using Canva, allowing them to enhance their images, create presentations, and prepare professional-quality visuals.
Major projects include creative photo series, composition challenges, photographer research and style studies, visual storytelling assignments, and portfolio development. Each project is designed to reflect real-world creative expectations and requires thoughtful effort and originality.
Throughout the semester, students will receive constructive feedback and participate in critiques that mirror professional creative environments. Projects are meaningful and cumulative—each one builds toward stronger skills and a polished final portfolio.
By the end of the course, students will have a collection of high-quality original work and a deeper understanding of photography as both an art form and a practical skill. This class is ideal for students who are motivated, creative, and willing to commit to doing serious, focused work.
